Alumni Day 2017

This November, for the second time, the Alumni Day for former and current students of the Elite Graduate Program for East European Studies (ESG) and the Graduate School for East and Southeast European Studies (GS OSES) took place. The day was organized by AMUROst e.V, the joint alumni association of the ESG and the GS OSES. In addition to career prospects after graduation, topics related to the Ukraine were on the agenda.

A highlight this year was the discussion round on "Ukraine, today and tomorrow" with the European Parliamentarian Rebecca Harms (The Greens / EFA), who has been traveling to Ukraine regularly since 1988. In her opinion, Ukraine is currently facing a particular challenge: to politically and economically transform the country and at the same time to end the war in Donbass. One focus here is the establishment of the rule of law, in which, apart from Ukraine, the European Union also bears responsibility.

This was followed by an exchange of experiences on the subject of "Job Search, Career Entry, Career Pathways and Further Education" with alumni Annika Nielsen, Patrizia Pawelek and Marlies Till. In small and very lively discussions, many questions were discussed about starting a career.

In the afternoon, alumni Anne Reis and Marco Fieber presented an extraordinary project on behalf of the Libereco Partnership for Human Rights e.V., a graphic novel about the war in Ukraine. It is based on nine biographical interviews with Ukrainians about the effects of the war on their lives.

The Alumni Day concluded with the introduction of the newly launched AMUROst mentoring program. Here, former students of the ESG assist current students as mentors and support them on their path in the post-graduate period. For a year, mentors and mentees will exchange ideas, learn from each other, and reflect on their professional interests.

Finally, on behalf of the participants and the association, we would like to thank our discussion partners, all helping hands and especially the coordination of the ESG and the management of the GS OES for their active support in the preparation and implementation of the Alumni Day.
