Research Project “Seeing history through the eyes of others”(2007/08)

The lady responsible for initiating and heading the research project, which included visits to memorial sites for victims of political repressions in Germany and Russia, was Ekaterina Makhotina, a student of East European Studies. The project was subsidised by the “Europe History Workshop” program, the Remembrance, Responsibility and Future Foundation, the Robert Bosch Foundation and the Munich University Society. The project ended with a two-day conference in Munich on May 6 and 7, 2008, which was attended by both German and Russian students.

To complement Ekaterina Makhotina’s Master’s dissertation, a documentary entitled “The Stalin Era in Karelia” was made by Irina Papakhova. Those who are interested can watch the film on the website of the Elite Network of Bavaria.
